Five Ways To Cut Your Grocery Bill

September 1st, 2010

Coupons Are Key

So many times while shopping, I think, “oh, I have a coupon for that, but it’s at home. After you clip your coupons, put them in an envelope and store them in your car or purse. They’ll always be on hand, no matter where you are or where you shop. This is a good tip for all of your store coupons, whether it is for groceries or clothing or a trip to the frozen yogurt shop.

Many coupons are available in the Sunday newspaper, but if you don’t get the paper, never fear, it is not the only place where coupons are available. The internet is a fantastic source for free printable coupons. Just about every product imaginable has a free printable coupon, from shampoo to dog food to baby items. Simply start up your favorite search engine and type in the product you want and add free printable coupon to your search. There are even several websites dedicated to printable online coupons.

Plan Your Meals

Who hasn’t found themselves searching the pantry and fridge at 5 o’clock in a desperate search to figure out what to eat for dinner? We have all been there, but we don’t have to be. The experts of frugal home management swear by meal planning. Not only will you have great dinner ideas, you can save money and ensure a healthier family by creating home-cooked meals. So sit with your family and discuss what meals are the favorites and plan for a week of meals. Save even more by planning meals around grocery circulars or whatever printable coupons you may have acquired.

If you really want to try some extreme meal planning, join the countless numbers of families that plan a month of meals at a time. Some even spend one weekend each month cooking and preparing a month’s worth of dinners to save time and money. For some menu and recipe ideas check out the OAMC (Once-A-Month) forums on websites such as FrugalMom.net, Once-A-Month-CookingWorld.com and Food.com.

Grocery Store Fliers Aren’t Just For The Recycle Bin

Every week, local grocery stores send out fliers advertising all their specials. Be sure to check these out and plan your meals around the best deals. If you can combine one of the specials with a manufacturer’s coupon, that’s even better.

Lists Are For Following

Have you ever painstakingly spent time making a grocery list only to leave it on the kitchen counter? Well, don’t do that. As soon as you finish your list, tuck it into your purse next to your coupons or put it in the car. When creating a list set it up so that the items are organized by grocery aisle or section. Mark a “C” next to any item that has a coupon and make sure you bring those clipped or printable coupons with you.

Don’t Forget About Those Non-Grocery Stores

Stores like Wal-Mart, Target and Big Lots often have great deals on food. (Bring your printable coupons for even bigger savings.) Your local dollar stores are other good places to stock up, although their products do sometimes tend to come in smaller sizes. Drug stores also often have excellent deals on food and drinks, as well as toiletries and over-the-counter medicines. Be sure to check all of the flyers to find the best deals for you. Your local farmers market is another good and fun option, where you can often get great deals on produce and fresh flowers.
