Conga: The Classy Drum Set

Conga, also known as tumbadora, is a single-headed, tall, narrow Cuban drum with African ancestry. A person who plays Conga is referred to as Conguero. Conga as an instrument has diverse and rich origin. The first Conga drums were made from salvaged barrels and known to be the principal instrument in Rumba and are used in Afro-Caribbean religious music. It has now become popular amongst Latin music and other forms of American pop music. Modern Congas have a staved wooden or fiberglass shell, and a screw-tensioned drumhead; they are commonly played in sets of two or four using the fingers and palms of the hand.
