Teenage Parenting - The First Steps

September 1st, 2010

Kids having kids, is a problem in this country. Teen parenting is very hard, because teens are not done being raised yet themselves. Life changes drastically for the teen parent. This is especially true for the mother. What about school, college, and being a normal teen? Well school and college can be worked out with help from family and agencies. Being a normal teen is all over. You are now a grown up. You have someone that depends on you for everything.

A baby will change your life and try your patience, and you must deal with it in a mature responsible way. It can be scary to be a parent when you are young. Teenagers are not ready to be parents. Some teens think they are, but once that baby is born, you have to put that baby first. The world is no longer centered on you and your wants anymore. The baby is now the center of your universe.

If you’re lucky, you may get some financial support, but all too often that doesn’t happen either. The problem is that the baby’s father is too young to act responsibly, and it’s typically easier for the father to walk away. The bonding that you feel with your baby as he or she grows in your womb is a very strong attachment.

Your parents will be much more likely to help you than the father of your baby. While your parents may be angry at first, they know how desperately you need their help. They will probably be willing to continue to provide you with room and board. If not, you are in serious trouble. A teen without even a high school degree can not make a living wage. Even with government help, you will have a very hard time making ends meet.

Your parents may not be able to provide the emotional support you need while you’re pregnant. If that is the case, reach out for help from other people in your community. When the baby is born, your parents are likely to become doting grandparents and provide a lot more help than you would have expected.

These days pregnant girls typically are welcome at most schools. Free daycare for the babies of students is provided at a few schools. If that service is not available to you, you’ll find that daycare is very expensive. If you do not have a relative who is willing to baby sit, you may not be able to finish high school.

Ask for help if you get frustrated, you do not want to let the baby or child see you break down. They rely on you for everything. You have to be strong. The most important thing you can give your child is unconditional love and support. Always be there for your child.

When you get older and look back on it, this will be another learning experience, but you will have a person that you gave life to, and took care of, and you will realize just how worth it that choice was to keep your baby.
